Description

1839/8 Head of 1838 Ten Dollar, MS61
Large Letters Reverse

1839/8 $10 Large Letters, Head of 1838, MS61 NGC. Large Letters. The ten dollar gold denomination resumed production in 1838 after a long absence since the 1804 eagles were produced. A new diameter and a fresh Liberty Head design greeted the resumption of ten dollar coinage. Christian Gobrecht was the de facto mint engraver while William Kneass recovered from a stroke. Gobrecht's design was short-lived, being modified later the following year. The position and shape of the neck truncation as well as the Large Letters reverse represent Gobrecht's Type of 1838 intended design. This is a frosty orange-gold Mint State example that displays the 9 of the date punched over an 8, although many numismatists believe the 9 is only recut, giving the illusion of an underlying 8. The "Type of 1838" or the "Head of 1838" perhaps describes the variety most succinctly. This example is well-struck at the centers and seemingly original with only a handful of tiny marks seen under magnification. A few obverse stars lack full definition.
