Description

1879 Goloid Metric Dollar in Copper
Judd-1632, PR66 Red and Brown, CAC
Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection

1879 $1 Goloid Metric Dollar, J-1632, Pollock-1829, R.7, PR66 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. This is George Morgan's design for a goloid metric dollar with the bust of Liberty facing left on the obverse, hair braided and coiled at the back of her head, E PLURIBUS UNUM above and the date 1879 below, with stars on the left and right side. On the reverse, the elemental components are central to that side and surrounded by a small circle of stars, and two other circles of statutory requirements between the stars and the rim. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. The Coiled Hair design is similar to that used on Morgan's four dollar gold pieces of 1879 and 1880. While the composition stated on the reverse is that of goloid, examples were struck in copper, silver, aluminum, and white metal. It is uncertain if any were actually struck in goloid. More than a dozen copper pieces are known, but none that are Red and Brown and finer than this piece. Most of each side is deep cherry-red with blue in the centers. Exceptional quality -- a minute planchet void near the left floret pedigrees this Premium Gem pattern. Population: 3 in 66 Red and Brown, 0 finer. CAC: 2 in 66, 0 finer (6/25).
