Description

1929 Indian Five, MS64
Late-Date Melt Rarity

1929 $5 MS64 PCGS. The first half eagle coinage that took place following 1916, was in 1929, when the Philadelphia Mint produced 662,000 coins. Few of these coins were released into circulation, speaking to a lack of demand for the denomination in circulation. That lack of commercial demand was nothing new, as it had caused half eagles to be nonexistent in production for more than a decade. The reason for the 1929 coinage is unclear, but whatever the case, only several hundred pieces were distributed through official channels, and the majority of the mintage was later melted after 1933.

The current near-Gem example displays frosty orange-gold and honey hues, with luminous recesses and strong visual appeal. A few small field marks are all that deny Gem classification for this late-series melt rarity.(Registry values: N4719)
