Description

1885 Eagle, MS63
Few Finer Pieces Known

1885 $10 MS63 PCGS. As with the 1884, this date used to be scarce in MS63, but a number of choice pieces have entered the market beginning around five years ago. Today, the 1885 is fairly easy to locate in this grade but it remains scarce in MS64 and it is rare in Gem. The unquestioned finest known is from the Admiral Collection (Heritage, 2/2018), lot 4314, graded MS66 by NGC and approved by CAC, which sold for a whopping $66,000.

This coin will sell for just a small premium over generic levels for the issue but it represents a lot of "bang for the buck" as do many of the eagles from the early-to-mid 1880s. Luster is soft and abundant, forming bands of peach-orange cartwheels on each side. Abrasions are light and undisturbing, and there is a hint of reflectivity in the fields. Population: 51 in 63, 15 finer (1/20).
Ex: Dallas Signature (Heritage, 10/2006), lot 2965, where it sold for $3,737.50.
