Description

George III gilt-copper Proof Pattern 1/2 Penny 1799-SOHO PR68 Cameo NGC, Soho mint, S-3778, Peck-1233. An irreplaceable jewel of a coin that is, for all practical purposes, flawless. While the 1799 Halfpenny series remains easily attainable to collectors in all but the best Mint State grades, gilt Patterns of the type are a different story. Few examples cross into gem territory, leaving the ideal representative out of reach to most collectors. However, such an apex seems to have been reached in this exceptional piece, ranked with fine die polish lines in the fields, strikingly mirrored, and completely absent any clearly identifiable instances of handling. Matthew Boulton's 1799 Halfpennies may be discounted by many as "too common" to be of justifiable interest (even this is not necessarily true in better conditional states), but a true gem like this may never be seen again, and its opulent golden finish only adds to its aura of sublime and pristine quality. Perhaps needless to say, the single-finest certified gilt example for all of Peck's varieties of the type, and a simple marvel of survivorship. For clarity, we note that NGC has incorrectly labeled the holder insert "1/4 P" (Farthing).
