Description

1833 Quarter Eagle, BD-1, MS62 Prooflike
Second Scarcest Date in the Series

1833 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.5, MS62 Prooflike NGC. Both sides are encircled by halos of prooflike green-gold, with thinner strips surrounding some areas of the design elements as well. Light abrasions are present on the obverse, and the reverse is moderately-abraded. There is scarcely a weakly struck area of the design.

The 3 in the date of this die marriage is broken, and Bass-Dannreuther suggest that the fracture happened during the production of this die marriage. The same crack can also be seen on the 1833 dimes, as they used the same punch, and a similar fracture can be observed on the separate punch used on the half eagles on this year.

The "Old Tenor" quarter eagle's lease on life began to slip in this year. Most examples did not make it much past July 31, 1834, when the weight reduction in quarter eagles took effect. As a result, this is the second scarcest date of the series, with an estimated 60-80 examples known, as per Bass-Dannreuther. Considering the scarcity and the choice surfaces of this example, it is an excellent representative for the quarter eagle enthusiast.
