Description

1857-C Gold Dollar, AU58
The Eliasberg Example

1857-C G$1 AU58 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg. The Eliasberg pedigree adds appeal to this near-Mint Charlotte gold dollar, one of 13,280 pieces struck. As noted in the Eliasberg sale, David Akers described the 1857-C planchet quality as "downright atrocious," and this coin is perhaps more fortunate than some in that regard. Still, numerous light lines are visible as well as a pedigree-confirming scratch above the wreath opening, and several dark freckles reveal patches light porosity on the surfaces. The coin is nevertheless well-struck with pleasing, medium-gold color. Census: 32 in 58, 16 finer (1/16).
