Description

1857 1C Obverse Die Clash with Seated Half, Snow-9, FS-402, MS64 PCGS. CAC. The prominent clash marks of a Seated half dollar obverse appear on the obverse of this important Flying Eagle cent variety. The consensus is that the multidenominational clashing occurred during a die swap procedure on a coining press. A reverse half dollar die was removed from the anvil position of the press and an obverse Flying Eagle cent die was installed. Then the press was allowed to cycle one stroke, possibly to seat the new die, during which the new cent die struck the still-installed half dollar obverse that was in the hammer position. About 100 Flying Eagle cents are known from this clashed die, according to Rick Snow. This near-Gem is CAC endorsed and well-detailed. Satiny tan-gold mint luster exhibits delicate chestnut overtones on each side. Eye appeal is pleasing.
