Description

1861 Ten Dollar, AU58
Civil War Type Coin

1861 $10 AU58 PCGS. The 1861 is the only ten dollar issue from the 1860s with a mintage above 16,000 pieces. Along with the 1847, the 1861 is one of the few No Motto issues regularly available in near-Mint condition. Two subtypes are known, distinguished by the shape of the middle hairbun. This example has a six-fold or bulging bun, while certain other 1861 eagles have a five-fold or rounded bun. Neither variety commands a market premium. The present wheat-gold piece displays luster within design elements and shows only a hint of wear. Marks are relatively minor, and mostly limited to Liberty's neck.(Registry values: N991)
