Description

1883 Gold Dollar, PR66 Ultra Cameo
A Condition Census Rarity

1883 G$1 PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC. JD-2, R.6. Proof gold dollar coinage in 1883 amounted to 207 coins -- significantly more than the 20- or 30-coin mintages of just a few years prior but far less than the 1,000+ coin proof mintages of 1884 to 1889. The 1883 proof is scarce in all grades, and Ultra Cameo examples are rarely seen at any level. NGC and PCGS combined list only a dozen such pieces, just a handful of which graded PR66 or better. This piece is the only coin in PR66 Ultra Cameo at NGC, and just two specimens are finer (10/20). The strike is sharp throughout, complementing mirrored, unmarked fields. Rich yellow-gold color adorns each side, and eye appeal excels.(Registry values: P2)
