1857-S Twenty Dollar, MS65
Bold S, Variety 20B
Ex:
S.S. Central America

1857-S $20 Bold S, Variety 20B, MS65 PCGS. Ex: S.S. Central America, SSCA 1723. In his American Coin Treasures and Hoards, Q. David Bowers (1997) notes that contemporary reaction to the S.S. Central America disaster reflected misplaced priorities; in his words, "there seemed to be more concern in the popular press about the loss of the gold aboard than there was about the fate of the passengers."

On the rediscovery of the ill-fated ship in the late 1980s and the subsequent litigation over it, its cargo of gold was the center of attention once again. Eventually, a court decision awarded the vast majority of the sunken treasure to the salvors, a fortune that included numerous 1857-S double eagles such as the present Gem. The wheat-gold surfaces display vibrant luster, and the carefully preserved portrait shows solid definition. It ranks as one of the best-preserved examples recovered from the wreck.
