Description

1847 N-22 Cent, MS67 Brown
Single Highest Graded

1847 1C N-22, R.3, MS67 Brown NGC. Grellman Die State e. A straight die line above the R in AMERICA is the identifier for Newcomb-22. The 1847 cent can be obtained in Mint State, but NGC has certified just two examples at the MS67 level, with none finer (6/23). Both are certified as N-22 by NGC, and are in fact the same coin, since a NGC certification ID lookup from its former Heritage auction appearance confirms that the insert from its prior holder was never sent to NGC. The present lot is the only 1847 cent to attain the MS67 level at either leading service. Cherry-red color accompanies protected regions, but the lustrous surfaces are principally powder-blue.
Ex: Russell J. Logan and Gilbert G. Steinberg (Bowers and Merena, 11/2002), lot 485. Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2013), lot 1123.
