Description

1885 Three Dollar, PR65 Cameo
Scarce in Gem; High Collecting Pressure

1885 $3 JD-1, High R.4, PR65 Cameo PCGS. CAC. Sun-gold toning occasionally deepens, mostly at the margins, and exquisite "orange-peel" texture exists in the fields. As CAC acknowledges, the surface preservation and contrast are solid by Cameo Gem standards. Only a whisper of weakness exists on the obverse hair, where the veins of the leaves and other wreath details are solidly defined on the reverse.

The combined Mint State and Proof mintage of three dollar gold pieces did not reach four digits in 1885, as by this point, the denomination had long outstayed its usefulness in commerce. However, for collectors today, this means that there is mutual collecting pressure on the two types. This is especially true at the Gem level. Only 27 certification instances have occurred at the Gem Mint State level at PCGS and NGC, where 37 proofs have achieved Gem Cameo certification status, resubmissions notwithstanding. The stunning surfaces of the present offering provide an excellent opportunity to obtain a scarce Gem example of this low-mintage issue.
