Description

1798 BD-3 Half Eagle, AU55
Large Eagle, Large 8, 14 Stars
Original Antique-Gold; Late Die State

1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 14 Stars Reverse, BD-3, R.5, AU55 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/d. Pleasing, antique-gold hues cover the lightly abraded surfaces of this 1798 five.

The half eagles of 1798 are attributed by type along three axes: Large Eagle vs. Small Eagle, Large 8 vs. Small 8, and 13 Star Reverses vs. 14 Star Reverses. The Small Eagle Reverse, BD-1, is of course a classic rarity, with auction results running well into the millions. The other seven die marriages have the Large Eagle reverse and are split between three other types. BD-3 is the sole representative with 14 Stars on the reverse (it has a Large 8). The other six 13 Star varieties are evenly split between the Large 8 and Small 8 logotypes.

Four die states of BD-3 exist, not including the prime a/a die state that has been proposed but not seen. The present example contains the crack through the A in AMERICA and the separate fracture that extends through the E of that same word, but lacks the unlisted obverse and reverse clashing. Between this die state, the inherent originality, the type coin status, and the low surviving population of three dozen according to Bass-Dannreuther, this is a can't-miss opportunity for the Early gold specialist.
