Description

1803/2 Five Dollar, MS63 CAC
BD-1, Seldom Surpassed

1803/2 $5 BD-1, R.4, MS63 NGC. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/c. All 1803-dated half eagles are overdates, and each of the four confirmed die marriages is scarce. The pick-up point for BD-1 is the arrowhead closest to the N in UNITED. It is centered beneath the N instead of near the right upright of the N. Most examples are the present die state with several cracks (but no breaks) on the reverse. This splendid representative is likely Condition Census for BD-1. The green-gold surfaces are free from any noticeable abrasions, although roller marks from the planchet are retained on the central reverse. The remainder of the strike is bold. Within the past dozen years, only one higher-graded example, an MS63+ PCGS specimen from the Bass Collection, has appeared in a Heritage auction.
