Nicholas I gold Specimen Pattern 10 Roubles 1836-CПБ SP62 PCGS, St. Petersburg mint, KM-Pn100, Bitkin-H882 (R3), Fr-153. The reign of Nicholas I yielded an impressive number of iconic numismatic creations: the platinum Roubles series, the "Family" Rouble, and this imperial portrait 10 Roubles Pattern celebrating Nicholas I and Alexandra Feodorovna's 10 Year Anniversary as Czar and Czarina. This issue is an intriguing combination of an obverse design that is more reminiscent of what would be displayed on a Coronation Medal and a reverse design unmistakably coin themed. The exquisite production quality of this piece is immediately apparent upon inspection; the frosted canary yellow motifs glistening with the light and the flashy fields providing eye-candy that will sustain continued appreciation. The patch of vertical hairlines behind Nicholas' head and the toning spot on the reverse clearly place this coin as the Hesselgesser specimen. Very near to the condition census representing both NGC and PCGS examples; a headline selection of this premier collection of Russian material.
