Description

1892 Barber Half Dollar, MS67
First-Year Type Coin

1892 50C MS67 NGC. By 1891, Christian Gobrecht's Seated Liberty motif had, in its various iterations, dominated silver denominations of United States coinage for more than half a century. Chief Engraver Charles Barber's designs debuted in 1892, and the novelty of the new motifs caused the public to retain examples of the first-year issue. As a result, the 1892 Barber half dollar is collectible in high grade for type purposes, even if conditionally scarce at the Superb Gem level. This piece is well-struck and lustrous, with old-time olive-gold, amber, and russet toning. On the reverse, the patina leaves the upper-right portion of the coin brilliant. Census: 10 in 67 (1 in 67+, 2 in 67 ), 2 finer (8/24).(Registry values: N4719)
