Description

Hamburg. Free City gold 2 Ducats 1726-IHL MS61 NGC, KM345, Fr-1119. 7gm. Mint master Johann Hinrich Löwe. MONETA AUREA CIVITATIS HAMBURGENS Coat of Arms of city within oval cartouche // CAROLUS VI D G ROM IMP SEMP AVG Crowned imperial eagle surrounded by titles of Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor (1711-1740). A shimmering, pale-gold selection with traces of brilliance in the protected areas. A rare type to begin with, and particularly desirable at this "top-pop" level of preservation.

Hamburg was a Free Imperial City enjoying a significant degree of autonomy within the Holy Roman Empire, reporting directly to the Emperor rather than being subordinate to a regional prince or ruler. As a major trading hub in Northern Europe, its strategic location on the Elbe River and Hanseatic League membership bolstered its economic prominence.
