Condition Census 1820 N-14 Cent Rarity
1820 1C Large Date AU58 NGC. XF40 EAC. N-14, Late Die State, R.5. A rare variety with the example offered here among the finer coins known. In fact, this cent is tied for third finest in the Condition Census. Newcomb recorded this variety as "R-6" or "the highest degree of rarity" based on his scale. In Newcomb's work, Rarity-6 was the top of the line. This is a later die state although not the terminal state. The reverse border dentilation is nearly gone, and the outside leaf under TAT is only a raised outline. Deep steel brown surfaces are accented by wisps of light tan color, faded from original red mint luster. A couple tiny edge nicks and a few other minor abrasions are noted, but this coin is still a highly attractive and pleasing example.
