Description
1794 C-1a Half Cent, AU58
Unusually Strongly Struck Normal Head
1794 1/2 C Normal Head, C-1a, B-1a, R.3, AU58 PCGS. Fuhrman
Die State 3. Glossy steel-brown surfaces show trivial marks that
are consistent with the grade. Absent is the typically seen
weakness across the bust and at the date, as this example displays
full hair detail and sharply-defined numerals. The obverse of 1794
C-1, used only on this variety, distinguishes itself from the other
obverses of 1794 by its low, doubled date and the fact that the
head of Liberty is placed closer to LIBERTY than to the date. The
reverse was also only used on this variety. Another unique feature
of the C-1 is that the Large Edge Letters subvariety is the most
common; the opposite is true for all other die marriages of the
year with multiple edge-induced subvarieties. In addition to the
typical Large and Small Edge variants, there is also a unique
Unlettered Edge variety, as well as four blundered edge examples
with the word HUNDRED overlapping the word FOR, according to Ed
Fuhrman.Ex: England; Andrew Lustig (11/2013); Bruce Gimelson; The Garrison Collection (Heritage, 1/2024), lot 3034.
