Description

1880 Double Eagle, MS61
Low-Mintage Philly Twenty
Rare Any Finer

1880 $20 MS61 NGC. The 1880 Liberty double eagle, from a low mintage of 51,420 pieces, is scarce-to-rare in all grades. This is the first of several low-mintage Philadelphia double eagles from the 1880s. Mint State examples -- when they are located -- are mainly in the MS60 to MS61 grades. Yellow-gold surfaces on this attractive example exhibit a sharp strike, including strong definition within Liberty's upper hair strands, the hair bun, and the star centers. Scattered light marks result in minor disruption to the luster flow, but do not diminish the undeniable eye appeal. NGC Census: 32 in 61, 6 finer (1/25).
