Description

1943 Lincoln Cent, XF40
on a Silver Dime Planchet

1943 1C Lincoln Cent -- Struck on a Silver Dime Planchet -- XF40 PCGS Secure. 1943 was the year that Lincoln cents were struck on zinc-plated steel planchets, to reserve copper for the war effort. Since a 1943 cent struck on a silver dime planchet looked similar, upon cursory inspection, to a regular issue cent of that year, the coin remained in circulation for a few years. Eventually, a collector noticed the proximity of WE TRUST and UNUM to the rim, and those legends exhibit the distortion associated with metal flow toward the border. The silver-gray surfaces show moderate wear but are unblemished.
