1794 S-49 Cent, AU55
Long-Lasting Reverse Die
Condition Census
1794 1C Head of 1794, S-49, B-41, R.2, AU55 NGC. Breen Die
State II. Blue-steel surfaces are even in color and only contain
the faintest abrasions, none of which require note. Central detail
is missing in the leaves, and the upper curls are slightly soft,
but the strike is otherwise solid. The S-49 uses Reverse X, dubbed
the "tough old lady of the big cents" by Sheldon, as it lasted
through six obverse dies, of which S-49 was the first. One of its
key diagnostics is the touching leaves at the top of the wreath.
This example is not recorded in the Noyes/Lusk early copper
database. The census listing at 1794largecents.com places this
example in third place where it is tied with several others.Ex: William F. Green; Green Estate; Virginia Collection (Brunk Auctions, Asheville, NC, 3/2021), lot 354.
