1796 S-107 Large Cent, XF Details
Rare Intermediate Die State
Retained Cud Over Y and Right

1796 1C Reverse of 1794, S-107, B-13, R.5 -- Environmental Damage -- PCGS Genuine. XF Details. The Reverse of 1794 design type comprises S-101-102, 106-112, and NC-5, with the most common among these only rated R.3. In Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents, the author recorded two die states without or with a rim break over the Y in LIBERTY, extending along the rim to the right. An intermediate die state is also known with a retained cud where the die is clearly cracked before breaking away. There are three examples of the intermediate die state and five examples of the late die state among 32 pieces recorded and illustrated in the Noyes database. This new intermediate die state example was found in the middle-Atlantic region early last year and is clearly condition census, perhaps the finest known for the variety and undoubtedly the finest known of the later die states. The impressive quality of this example is clear from the photos. The surfaces, while dark and slightly rough, are a nice change from the usual corroded appearance of most 1796 Draped Bust cents. The surfaces show light porosity yet exhibit a rarely encountered beauty that is unlike most others.
