Description

1874 Quarter, PR67
Arrows at Date

1874 25C Arrows PR67 NGC. Briggs 5-D. Ex: Kaufman. The small arrowheads left and right of the date signified a minuscule weight change that occurred in 1873, with that design feature continuing in production the following year. At the time these coins were minted, dies were standardized with little variance from one to the next. However, the arrow heads were still hand-punched in the die, and can be used to identify different varieties. On this example, both appear to slant upward, following the curve of the border.

A highly attractive Superb Gem, this lovely proof has obvious contrast but lacks the Cameo designation to the dark reverse toning. Both sides are fully mirrored with splashes of peripheral gold and iridescent toning on the obverse. Census: 5 in 67, 1 finer (9/25).
