Description

1888-S Double Eagle, MS64
Among the Finest at PCGS

1888-S $20 MS64 PCGS. The 1888-S double eagle is a plentiful date in lower grades, but Choice examples such as this are scarce. The present example ranks among the finest at PCGS and is one of the most impressive 1888-S twenties known. The Saddle Ridge Hoard added a handful of MS64 examples to the population charts, but the scarcity of this issue was hardly affected because only four pieces are known in a numerically finer grade (all at NGC). This S-mint double eagle is boldly struck with vibrant green-gold luster that shows warmer peach hues at the centers. A few minor marks on the cheek are all that might preclude a Gem classification, which is seldom granted for the issue. PCGS Population: 76 in 64 (3 in 64+), 0 finer (1/25).
