Description

1839-O Half Dollar, GR-1, AU58
Sought-After New Orleans Issue
The Late Die State

1839-O 50C GR-1, R.1, AU58 PCGS. CAC. While five die pairs were required for the 178,976-piece mintage, fully 95% of surviving 1839-O half dollars are from the GR-1 die marriage. This still-lustrous, nearly Mint State example is attractive, showing only brief circulation -- a touch of high-point wear, with a sprinkling of minor, delicate abrasions. Blue and sea-green toning surrounds light-gold interiors. The coin is well-struck despite advanced die cracks on both sides, with the reverse die essentially shattered. Always in demand for its obverse mintmark, this O-mint date is highly sought by branch mint specialists and Bust half enthusiasts. CAC endorsement is an important confirmation of the coin's quality. Population (all varieties): 28 in 58 (1 in 58+), 42 finer. CAC: 11 in 58, 7 finer (2/20).
