Description

1907 High Relief Double Eagle, PR61
Affordable Example of an Important Issue

1907 $20 High Relief PR61 NGC. Sumptuous light-gold surfaces are intermixed with deeper highlights, including a tinge of green-gold. Microscopic abrasions are present, though only two small nicks in the eagle's foremost wing and one just above the sun on the reverse are mentionable. Strike is superlative, with hardly any details left undefined.

1907 is the first year of issue for the Saint-Gaudens double eagle, and with it, came the most major changes in the history of the double eagle's 60 year production. First was the design change. While there were two minor modifications to the Liberty Head design throughout its production, the basic devices had remained unchanged since the inception of the denomination in 1849. The second, of course, was the end of the Brilliant Proof era and the start of the Satin Proofs. The new Saint-Gaudens design was deemed too complex to properly polish the fields, and their dished, rather than flat, appearance was also cited as an impediment. The present offering represents an affordable example of this important and popular issue that played a prominent role in numismatic history.
