1907 High Relief Double Eagle, PR65
Lustrous Surfaces and Excellent Quality

1907 $20 High Relief PR65 NGC. White-gold to yellow-gold surfaces contain a warm glow of luster. Several minuscule abrasions on the right side of the obverse serve for pedigree identification. Nary a hint of weakness can be found.

The change from the Liberty Head to Saint-Gaudens design on the double eagle in 1907 was the most major evolution in the denomination's history. While there were three distinct types of Liberty Head double eagle, they only adjusted the lettering and position of the design elements, but the basic design was unchanged. The same tinkering happened with the Saint-Gaudens design, comprising four distinct types, but it all happened in 1907 and 1908, creating more variation in these two years than in the prior 60 years combined. The original design, dubbed the Ultra High Relief, was inspired by Theodore Roosevelt's desire to improve the aesthetic quality of American coinage to match the Ancient Greeks. However, the coins took nine strikes to fully impress the design and did not stack properly, making them unsuitable to mass production and commerce. The relief was lowered, creating the present High Relief design, but it still required three strikes for full definition. Finally, at the end of 1907, the relief was lowered for the final time. However, the changes were still not complete. For the final change in 1908, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added just above the sun on the lower reverse; the motto was omitted from the original design.

Along with the change to the Saint-Gaudens design came the swapping out of Brilliant Proofs for Satin Proofs. The Mint claimed that the proofing technology was not sophisticated enough to properly polish the complex design, and the concave fields were also cited as an explanation. The present offering represents an important talisman of a transitional time in American coinage.
