Description

1823 Half Dollar, Sharp AU58
O-101a, Patched 3

1823 50C Patched 3, O-101a, R.1, AU58 PCGS. CAC. The Patched 3 variety appears first as a late die state of the O-101 Broken 3. It is then paired with a different reverse to become the scarcer O-102 variety. This example is the more frequently seen O-101a with a right-leaning 3 and the two halves of the 3 joined by a rudimentary punch fashioned by the Mint. Faint reddish-gray toning at the borders attends the sharply struck silver centers, with plentiful mint luster on both sides. CAC endorsed. Population: 13 in 58, 22 finer (5/16).
