Description
1823 Bust Half Dollar, Choice AU
O-110a, The 'Ugly' 3
1823 50C Ugly 3, O-110a, R.3, AU55 PCGS. A numismatic
equivalent to "the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly," the 1823 Broken 3,
Patched 3, and Ugly 3 provide a trio of misshapen and
often-confused digits. The Ugly 3 variety started as a Perfect 3 as
seen in O-110. The Parsley reference blames a die crack for the
later-state deformity on the 3, while others believe it to be an
engraver's crude attempt to repair the digit. This is a
silver-white, lightly circulated example of the collector favorite,
with the 3 in the date apparently reworked by the Mint in crude
fashion. Light die cracks travel from the milling to the 3 and
upward to Liberty's lower hair curls. The coin is bright and mostly
untoned with some pleasing golden-gray overtones. The O-110a
variety is rated R.3. Population: 11 in 55, 87 finer (5/16).Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2014), lot 4436.
