Description

1849-C Quarter Eagle, MS60
Extremely Rare in Mint State

1849-C $2 1/2 MS60 NGC. Winter-1. The 1849-C is among the scarcer Charlotte issues in the quarter eagle series, coming from a mintage of 10,220 pieces. Doug Winter suggests that only 125 to 150 examples survive in all grades, and that Uncirculated pieces are extremely rare. NGC and PCGS combined report 10 Mint State submissions, with all but two in MS60 or MS61. That total almost certainly contains duplications from resubmissions. A single MS65 NGC coin (previously MS64 PCGS) is the finest certified, although the Smithsonian coin is also exceptional according to Jeff Garrett. Recent auction appearances of Uncirculated 1849-C quarter eagles in any grade have been few and far between. This green-gold example shows no circulation wear and the strike is unusually sharp for a Charlotte issue -- only the eagle's left (facing) leg lacks complete definition. Scattered abrasions define the grade. This bright, satiny 1849-C quarter eagle is quite pleasing for the MS60 level and currently serves as the NGC plate coin. NGC Census: 3 in 60, 7 finer (10/25).(Registry values: P2)
