Description

1853-D Two and a Half, AU58
Low-Mintage Branch Issue

1853-D $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS. Winter 17-N. The Philadelphia Mint produced more than 1.4 million quarter eagles during 1853, but its Dahlonega cousin managed to strike only 3,178 examples of the denomination. PCGS Coin Facts estimates only six different coins in Mint State, and only 90 survivors in all grades. Third-party census and population shows higher figures, but they include duplicate submissions over the past 40 years or so. This Borderline Uncirculated specimen is remarkably unabraded, and it is also free from planchet issues or strike-throughs. The fields are semiprooflike. The strike shows incompleteness on the lower half of the eagle and the high points of the portrait.(Registry values: P2)
