Description

1903 Two and a Half, MS68
Ideal Liberty Gold Type Coin

1903 $2 1/2 MS68 NGC. The 1903 is one of the more common quarter eagle issues in Mint State, struck from a healthy mintage of 201,060 pieces. With many from the issue stored in bag quantity for many years in vaults, scattered abrasions are common, if not expected. Not so for this Superb Gem, which must have been carefully set aside at the time of issue, perhaps as a Christmas present within an upper-class family.

The boldly struck peach-gold surfaces are essentially pristine. Rich, frosty luster on the razor-sharp devices produce an exceptional cartwheel effect. The dentils exhibit infrequent glimmers of russet color, as made from alloy imperfections. Unimprovable at either service, with a solitary MS68 at PCGS and seven other pieces graded the same at NGC (9/25). Census: 8 in 68, 0 finer (9/25).
Ex: Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2020), lot 4363.
