1795 O-103 Half Dollar, XF Details
Scarce Variety, Repunched M in AMERICA

1795 50C 2 Leaves, O-103, T-29, R.5 -- Harshly Cleaned -- PCGS Genuine. XF Details.
Tompkins Die State 1/2. The M in AMERICA was originally punched too close to A, then repunched, weakening the die in that area. Several die cracks at the legend include strong radial cracks from the rim to the first A in AMERICA, and another through the right edge of C. The obverse shows numerous cracks as well, all inherited from previous uses of the die. The Overton-103 (Tompkins-29) variety is scarce in all die states and unknown in full Mint State. This example displays solid XF sharpness. Hairlines exist from a previous cleaning, but the surfaces have recovered to a golden-gray sheen with slightly deeper, reddish-gray toning at the borders. There are some adjustment marks at the right-hand stars, adding to strike weakness in that area. Sharpness on the central motifs exceeds the XF level.
