Description

1795 50C 2 Leaves, O-107a, T-31, R.5, Fine 12 NGC. Tompkins Die State 1/4. A number of Flowing Hair varieties were cut short in their production by severe, bisecting reverse die cracks. Such cracks formed among 1794 varieties (O-101, O-105, and O-110), and 1795 die pairs (O-106, O-107, O-111). All are extremely popular with Overton collectors and early half dollar specialists. Improper annealing (hardening) of the dies is often blamed, although the frequency of breakage suggests other factors were at work as well. This O-107a example shows bi-level surfacing of the reverse along the bisecting die crack, and weakening of the right-hand stars opposite the initial crack formation. Pleasing warm-gray toning complements minimally marked, microgranular surfaces that have a few light adjustment marks at the upper-left reverse border.
