Description

John Work Garrett's MS65 Red
Small Motto 1864 Two Cent Piece

1864 2C Small Motto MS65 Red PCGS. Ex: Garrett Collection. In its appearance in the Garrett auction, the present coin was cataloged as "MS-65. ... Both the obverse and the reverse are fully brilliant. The reverse shows traces of a fingerprint. A very beautiful specimen of this elusive variety. Any pristine, uncleaned two-cent piece is difficult to find."
Although the PCGS Population is 17 in MS65 Red with three finer (11/08), this figure likely includes resubmissions, since we are locate only two prior auction appearances in the present decade as PCGS MS65 Red, a March 2005 ANR example and another as lot 256 in our recent Dallas Signature, which realized $21,850. Housed in an oversized "Premium" PCGS holder from the early to mid 1990s.
Ex: 189th Auction, Thomas L. Elder, 2/1923; Garrett Collection, Sale I (Bowers and Ruddy, 11/1979), lot 220.
