Description

1855 Three Cent Silver, MS65
Scarce Type Two Issue

1855 3CS MS65 NGC. Repunched 855. Breen wrote in his Encyclopedia that all proofs and nearly all business strikes were from the same obverse die with the date repunched. He also noted that the proofs were coined first, and the business strikes were produced later with only traces of the repunching visible beneath the 55. However, the present piece shows clear repunching of the 855 and is in the same die state as the proofs. The present example is fully brilliant with frosty mint luster, bold design definition, and heavy reverse clash marks. NGC Census: 12 in 65, 7 finer (12/25).
