Description

1796 Draped Bust Dollar, Fine 15
B-5, BB-65, Large Date, Small Letters

1796 $1 Large Date, Small Letters, B-5, BB-65, R.2, Fine 15 PCGS. Bowers Die State II. A starkly contrasted Choice Fine example of the sole Large Date, Small Letters 1796 variety. Deep ebony-gray fields provide a dramatic backdrop for the lightly toned silver-gray raised elements, creating a profound "circulation cameo" effect. Liberty's hair definition and the eagle wing detail suggest an even finer grade. A lens reveals the fields and devices are free of all but the inevitable microscopic ticks and tiny marks. The BB-65 variety is confirmed by a leaf under the A in STATES and the ubiquitous, lumplike die flaw between I and C of AMERICA.
