Description

1798 $1 Small Eagle, 15 Stars, B-2, BB-81, R.3, Good 6 PCGS. Bowers Die State II. An essential for early-dollar type, not only for the Small Eagle reverse, but also as the only 1798 dollar with 15 obverse stars. The obverse design elements are clearly outlined, as is most of the wreath. The lower half of the eagle is indistinct. As a rule, the reverse is weaker than the obverse for the variety, prompting David Bowers to suggest that the issue should be graded by the obverse only. Deep steel-gray fields provide pleasing contrast with the lighter silver-gray devices. The central reverse displays wispy marks, none of which are significant at the assigned grade.
