Description

1860 Clark, Gruber Five Dollar, MS60
K-2, Attractive Reddish-Gold Surfaces

1860 $5 Clark, Gruber & Co. Five Dollar MS60 PCGS. K-2, R.4. Coins were only struck by Clark, Gruber for two years, but the firm left two indelible stamps on U.S. numismatics. First, the firm had an impeccable reputation and set the standard for converting Colorado gold rush gold into coined form. Second, the firm sold its assaying operations and building to the United States government, using it as an assay office, and finally in 1906 the Denver Mint was built on the site. Predictably, high-grade Clark, Gruber gold is a challenge to locate. This piece has the expected softness of strike in the centers. The fields are lightly marked -- the notable exception being the field above the eagle's head -- an area that also is several shades deeper in color than the rest of the light reddish-gold coin. Listed on page 398 of the 2016 Guide Book.
