Description

1846-D Quarter Eagle, AU53
Original Orange-Gold Patina

1846-D/D $2 1/2 AU53 NGC. Winter 7-L. Honey-gold surfaces are imbued with hints of orange and some "crustiness" persists in the protected areas. The fields are abrasion-free, with a thin scratch on the cheek being the only mark of note. Bowers estimates that 175 to 250 examples survive, with only 3 to 5 in Mint State, establishing original AU examples like the present offering as the best choice for specialists. The present example is the repunched mintmark Winter 7-L, although only a trace of the repunching remains.(Registry values: P2)
