Description

Lightly Circulated 1803 Dollar, AU53
Large 3, B-6, BB-255, Ex: Hesselgesser

1803 $1 Large 3 AU53 PCGS. B-6, BB-255, R.2. Ex: Hesselgesser. Three different AU examples of BB-255 from the Dr. Robert Hesselgesser collection appeared in a February 2007 Ira & Larry Goldberg auction, followed by a fourth Hesselgesser duplicate in that firm's September 2007 sale. The present coin is different from any of that quartet, and is the Large 3 he retained at that time. This is an impressive early dollar due to its sharpness, its partial mint luster, its lack of relevant abrasions, and its attractive variegated powder-blue and chestnut-tan toning.
Ex: Pre-Long Beach Sale (Ira & Larry Goldberg, 2/2008), lot 2908; Milwaukee Central States (Heritage, 4/2010), lot 2157, which realized $9,775.(Registry values: P2)
