Description

1885 Half Dollar, PR65 Cameo
Boldly Contrasted

1885 50C PR65 Cameo NGC. A mere 930 proof half dollars were produced at the Philadelphia Mint for 1885. Combined with a low mintage of 5,200 business strikes, this is a challenging date in any grade. Ron Guth suggests, "Approximately one in five examples are Cameo Proofs." The present Gem proof features frosty motifs that are boldly contrasted by deeply mirrored fields. Silvered devices illuminate rose-gold iridescence with mottled blue and rust on the rim. Census: 7 in 65 Cameo (1 in 65«), 26 finer (11/22).
