Description
1805 Draped Bust Quarter, MS64+
Popular B-2 Variety, Ex: Gardner
Only One Finer Coin at PCGS
1805 25C B-2, R.2, MS64+ PCGS. CAC. According to Mint
records, 121,394 Draped Bust quarters were struck in 1805, with
five die varieties known for the date. On this coin, the 5 in the
date touches the bust and the topmost curl is under E in LIBERTY,
while the reverse shows a gap in the dentils above E2 and a die
line joins the stem to C2, identifying the popular B-2 variety.
Heavy die clashing shows on the reverse, as always seen in this die
pairing, and the right side of the R in LIBERTY is weak. Splendid
cobalt-blue and mint-green rim patina encircles interiors tinged in
heather and rose. The strike is fairly soft through the centers of
each side, particularly on the reverse where some of the shield
lines are incompletely struck up. There are no mentionable planchet
adjustment marks or singular abrasions on either side. Eye appeal
is simply terrific. The B-2 variety was recognized by Captain John W. Haseltine when he compiled the Haseltine Type Table, the first attempt to systematically list the die varieties of early quarters, half dollars, and silver dollars, in October of 1881 (it seems that numismatist John Colvin Randall did much of the research on this project). The B-2 designation corresponds to Haseltine's H-1, but recent analysis of die evidence indicates that the B-2 was actually the second variety in the emission sequence. The appeal of the B-2 variety goes far beyond series specialists, as the B-2 and B-3 die pairings of 1805 quarters are among the most available of the Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle motif, struck only from 1804 through 1807. The B-1, B-2, B-3, and B-9 of 1806 are similarly available, making those combinations the most desirable for legions of type collectors. This coin should find a home in the finest collection or Registry Set. Population (for all varieties): 2 in 64+, 1 finer (5/16).
