Description
1881-O Liberty Eagle, MS61
Elusive, Low-Mintage Issue
1881-O $10 MS61 NGC. Variety 1. The 2020 Guide Book
lists the mintage for the 1881-O Liberty eagle at a meager 8,350
pieces and Doug Winter ranks it as the fourth-rarest issue of the
New Orleans Mint series in both absolute and high grade rarity. The
1881-O is seldom encountered in any Mint State grade and none have
been certified in grades above MS61 by either of the leading
grading services (3/20). This attractive MS61 example exhibits a
sharper than average strike for the issue, with full radial lines
on the star centers and just a trace of softness on Liberty's
curls. The rich yellow-gold surfaces show the expected number of
minor contact marks for the grade and traces of prooflike
reflectivity are visible in sheltered areas around the devices.
