Description

1908-D Indian Five, MS64
First Denver Issue, CAC

1908-D $5 MS64 PCGS. CAC. 1908 marked the introduction of the Indian five dollar gold coin, with the Denver Mint accounting for 148,000 pieces. Ample quantities survive through MS64, but Gems are rare with PCGS showing only 16 examples in MS65 or higher (6/25). Olive-gold surfaces on soft, satiny luster are highlighted with subtle hues of rose and caramel on this near-Gem Indian half eagle. The strike is slightly soft on the ermine tails but shows good details on the eagle's feathers, and the mintmark is sharp. A small set of marks on the Chieftain's cheek defines the grade, otherwise only light abrasions are visible under a loupe and are not significant.(Registry values: N2998)
