Description

1795 BD-9 Half Eagle, Fine 15
Early Die State

1795 $5 Small Eagle, BD-9, High R.5, Fine 15 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/b. No clash marks are evident on either side, although they may be obscured, while the reverse die crack of later states is not present on this piece. The obverse die was used for varieties BD-8, 9, and 10, while the reverse was also used for BD-7. The obverse was also used for the unique Heraldic Eagle variety, BD-13. Although BD-9 is a plentiful variety relative to some other 1795 half eagle marriages, less than 50 examples are known. Light yellow-gold surfaces exhibit peripheral orange toning. Both sides have old scratches and myriad surface marks of varying degree.
