Challenging No Motto Issue
1866-S $10 No Motto -- Cleaned -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details.
While the 1866-S No Motto is scarce in any grade and seldom exceeds
the XF level, it is slightly more available than its With Motto
counterpart. The combined mintage of the two important varieties is
an estimated 12,250 pieces. Of those, 8,500 coins are thought to be
of the No Motto type. This example is a bit bright from a past
cleaning, but retains bold About Uncirculated sharpness and
pleasing medium-gold color. Traces of original luster exist on both
sides. Only 40 to 55 pieces are thought to survive in all grades
combined (9/24).
