Description

1889-S Twenty Dollar, MS64+
Eye-Catching Mint Bloom

1889-S $20 MS64+ PCGS. The availability of the 1889-S double eagle was significantly increased by the discovery of the Saddle Ridge Hoard in February 2013, but its conditional scarcity at the Choice grade level should not be written off. The Hoard about doubled the supply of MS64-graded coins at PCGS, though that service still only shows 68 examples in this grade (15 in 64+), and only five finer (10/14). The present coin, with noticeable semiprooflike mirroring and dazzling apricot-gold luster, rivals the Saddle Ridge Hoard coins in eye appeal, which is significant considering how the latter are among the most eye-appealing examples of this issue known to collectors. The strike is sharp and only a few tiny marks on the cheek preclude a full Gem grade.(Registry values: N7079)
